Open Your Eyes (professionally and personally)

During a nice, easy jog the other day, I started to really notice my surroundings. We’ve had a lot of rain lately, so everything is really green and healthy. Plus, this is my view from the Chicago lakefront pathNot too shabby.

I realized I need to do that more often – take time to appreciate my surroundings, especially on runs where I usually just zone out.

It reminded me of the Spanish movie, “Abre Los Ojos” (Vanilla Sky became the American version. Both movies star the insanely good looking Penelope Cruz – a woman who is very attractive when speaking Spanish but somehow looks even better speaking English with a Spanish accent. But I digress…)

Open your eyes

Abre los ojos means “open your eyes,” and I thought that was a really beautiful imperative that incites a lot of positive imagery. It evokes optimism and looking to the horizon. It suggests being awake, alert, and aware. “Open your eyes” encourages one to take in what’s around and live in the now.

“Open your eyes” also implies seeing and wisdom, it leads to experiences and understanding. It’s the opposite image of being close-minded.

Most of all, “open your eyes” tells us to be ready – ready for the good, the bad, the beautiful, and the ugly parts of life. If we’re ready for challenges, we can meet them with more success (like in the video above, from the opening scene of LOST). If we’re ready for good times, we can more thoroughly experience and enjoy them.

In addition to the flowery optimism listed above, “open your eyes” is extremely sound personal and professional advice. If you’re wondering why you haven’t met someone, received a promotion or gotten a job, you might find that the answer to your problems is closer than you think. You just have to look for it.

Oh, and don’t worry, I wouldn’t end this post without including a picture of Penelope.
