By now, you’ve probably heard about the Target breach. In mid December, Target announced a massive credit card breach that took place before, during, and after Black Friday (11/27-12/15).
Originally we thought the Target breach affected more than 40 million customers – those who shopped AT Target (not Target.com) during that time had their financial information compromised. Now it seems the news is even worse, and the number is up to 70 million.
The method used to steal this information allows the thieves to replicate your credit and possibly debit card information. That’s right, they can basically print counterfeit versions of your credit card. If you paid with a debit card and entered your PIN, they can recreate your debit card and take cash out of an ATM. Not good at all.
How do I know if I was a victim of the Target breach?
If you’re a Mint user, it’s dead simple to find out if you shopped there during, and were likely a victim of, the Target breach. This works for daily and “prodigal” users alike, because Mint automatically downloads these transactions whether you actively use Mint or not.
On the web app, just go to Overview>Transactions>and type “Target”
And on the iPad it’s even easier, just tap the magnifying glass on the home screen and type “Target” into the search bar that appears.
Mint is a powerful tool that allows you to search transactions quickly, even if you don’t use it often. The Target breach is a seriously scary event, and we need to always be vigilant about our financial security. For occasions like this, it definitely pays learn Mint’s features, especially situations just like this.
